Student recommendation letters are letters in which the writer vouches for the qualities, characteristics or abilities of the student recommended with respect to the student’s academic performance and character. Student recommendation letters are written specifically for the student, who is being recommended.

Student recommendation letters are required at the time of admissions in colleges where these letters are written by a person who is aware of your academic performance, character and future aspirations. It is one of the important parts of the student academic file. Start the letter clearly mentioning the name of the student and specify how long you have known the student. If you are a teacher specify which classes you have taught her or him in. If you are not very familiar with the student go through the student’s transcripts or list of extracurricular activities achievements he or she has specified in the application form so that you familiarize with him or her.

It should include the achievements and extracurricular activities of the student but the emphasis should be on personal qualities like the leadership qualities, generosity, ambition in life, service to the community etc. You must provide examples wherever necessary.

The language of the letter should be strong and sincere. Conclude the letter with restating the qualities of the student and his /her potential to succeed at the college to which he /she are seeking admission.
